RSD6  Students are Heart Heroes and Design Engineers!

Mrs Wright

Students jumped and hula hooped their way to heart healthy bodies while helping kids with heart problems. During the month of February, Wellness and PE classes focus around heart health, the cardiovascular system, and jump rope skills. It was special to witness the growth mindset so many took on while challenging themselves to learn new and original jump moves.

We are very proud of the desire and enthusiasm displayed by RSD6 to raise money for the American Heart Association in order to help kids with heart problems. Our community of heart heroes raised $4,500!

Engineering a marble run can be challenging, but having to fit the entire design on a single paper plate using only 3 straws, 2 pieces of paper, and tape made the challenge all the more fun! Using the Engineering Design Process, students were able to work through the constraints by brainstorming ideas, create and test their model, and make necessary improvements. Younger classes had a blast testing the designs created by the upper grade students!

     P.E. @ GCS

All grades at GCS are beginning their floor hockey unit. Students will be working on stick handling, passing, shooting and basic game play. Safety is always most important and the students are doing a great of keeping sticks down and being kind at all times. The students' sportsmanship is really fun to watch.

Grades 3 and 4 students are continuing to train for their CT Physical Fitness Test. This test measures aerobic endurance (1 mile run), flexibility (sit & reach), upper body strength and endurance (push-ups), and abdominal muscle strength and endurance (curl-ups). We will be working on these components now until their final test in early Spring.

Region 6 is proud to be participating in the Torrington Kids Marathon again this year. Kids Marathon is to help students develop early habits of physical education and healthy eating habits using a method known as 5210. 5210 is an easy-to-remember

plan that spells out exactly what you need to keep yourself and your family healthy and fit. What does 5210 stand for? 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day. No more than 2 hours of unproductive screen time per day. 1 or more hours of physical activity per day. 0 sugary drinks. More information about the Kids Marathon will be coming soon.

Hello Families,

Spring is right around the corner! One of my favorite activities/ lessons to do in the springtime is to hatch chicks. I am very excited to be able to bring this experience to Goshen Center School this year. It’s a great way to teach life cycles to young children and to bring some fun and excitement into the classrooms as well.

The incubator will be set up in a centralized location and teachers will have the opportunity to bring their students to watch and learn about the process and life cycle of a chicken.

I am looking for families that already have chickens (and a rooster) who would like to donate some fertilized eggs to put in the incubator. I will need about 9 eggs. I am also looking for some families interested in adopting the baby chicks about a week after they hatch. More than likely, not all of the eggs will hatch, but we will have somewhere between 6 -9 chicks that will need a home. The estimated timeline for this project is April 18th - May 8th, which chicks being ready to go to their new home around May 15th.

If you are interested and able to help with this project please email me at: sschuch@rsd6.org

Thank you so much!
