Life in the Library In addition to checking out books each week, students engage in activities that encourage them to problem solve, collaborate and take on new challenges. In the Book Stacking Challenge, groups were given 4 pieces of paper and several pieces of tape to build a structure that could hold the most amount of books without toppling over. In the younger grades, students worked in groups to build the longest paper chain using one sheet of construction paper, scissors and two glue sticks. Not sure which is the harder challenge, planning and building the chain or figuring out how to delegate responsibilities and share limited supplies! We often use Keva Blocks to explore various engineering concepts. 4th and 5th graders worked in groups to build graduated ramps with the goal of getting their ball to roll and bounce from one structure to the next.
To help students become familiar with books in the library and practice using call numbers to locate titles, we had a friendly competition called Find The Book Race. Students drew cards and went head to head to find a book from a certain nonfiction section, a particular author, or a title starting with a certain letter. Getting the students to move around the library, helps increase their awareness about what resources we have and sparks their interest in future books to borrow. In addition, students are learning that reading isn’t necessarily a sedentary or solitary activity. |

Hello Families, Spring is right around the corner! One of my favorite activities/ lessons to do in the springtime is to hatch chicks. I am very excited to be able to bring this experience to Goshen Center School this year. It’s a great way to teach life cycles to young children and to bring some fun and excitement into the classrooms as well. The incubator will be set up in a centralized location and teachers will have the opportunity to bring their students to watch and learn about the process and life cycle of a chicken. I am looking for families that already have chickens (and a rooster) who would like to donate some fertilized eggs to put in the incubator. I will need about 9 eggs. I am also looking for some families interested in adopting the baby chicks about a week after they hatch. More than likely, not all of the eggs will hatch, but we will have somewhere between 6 -9 chicks that will need a home. The estimated timeline for this project is April 18th - May 8th, which chicks being ready to go to their new home around May 15th. If you are interested and able to help with this project please email me at: sschuch@rsd6.org. Thank you so much! Sara Schuch, M.S., BCBA Special Education Teacher Goshen Center School |
